Countdown to 4th of July

READY OR NOT HERE IT COMES… 4th of July is exactly 4 weeks from today. It’s hard to believe with this crazy weather that we are approaching the beginning of summer. But we also know how quickly the summer weather plays tricks on us. Just when we get comfortable with a few days of rain – it’s 80 degrees and the clothes strip off whether you are ready or not. What can you do in 4 weeks? Well, if you put your mind to it and really focus, you can get a lot accomplished.

1) Start with your menu. Follow it 110% and you will see the weight loss every week. Give up a snack when you can and you will see it even faster (less is always better when trying to lose weight).

2) Exercise is always great because it helps you look and feel better – get out of the house and away from the kitchen. Exercises doesn’t always have to mean hardcore. It can be something you like… shoot hoops, dance, walk, bike ride, golf, tennis… anything that will keep you moving out of the house and in a healthy state while having fun.

3) Think about what you want going into the summer. Even if you are not happy where you are right now it will only get better if you continue to do the right things… and if you don’t do the right things it will continue to get worse.

4) Summer is social and if you know you will be drinking more than usual then keep an eye on how much you are drinking –  it’s a trigger. While it can be used as a snack, try and keep it for the weekends. When possible, fuel your body through the week with weight loss choices and keep the alcohol for weekend snacks and Cheat Day only.

This is such a serious time to really concentrate and be as consistent as you can with your meals and snacks. The reason is because the closer it gets to the 4th of July the more drastic you will be willing to try a Fad Diet that will put you in the wrong direction. There are no miracle pills or potions. The only thing that is going to get you to a good place and where you want to be and where you can continue is HARD WORK, BEING PERSISTENT AND CONSISTENT. Just like everything else in life you have to put the work in to get the results. So if you are feeling like, “Oh crap, I only have 4 weeks what pills or potions are out there” – I’m telling you right now to put your efforts into your menu because you know when you do it right it always works for you. Have your one Cheat Day a week and follow your meals and snacks. But you can’t Cheat during the week and then Cheat on the weekend. You can’t Cheat during the week and still have a Cheat Day and you can’t Cheat for 5 days and then be good for 5 days and expect a miracle. It doesn’t work like that. KEEP IT SIMPLE: take the next 4 weeks and follow your menu. Your meals and snacks and include any fun exercise. Have ONE Cheat Day a week and I promise you by 4th of July you will be in such a great place you will be so happy that you did it. Even if you have more to lose you will be so much happier, lighter and thinner than you are today!

This is a game. It’s how you play it that will determine your outcome. If you follow the rules you will have the best success. If you cheat when you should’t be cheating, then you will be less successful. It’s not much different than how you should view anything in your life. If you want to be the best, look the best and feel the best then you have to act it! Be amazing and give everything that matters in your life 110%. Fight for it and be persistent! … and let go and give the nonsense, the gossip, and all the other unimportant things 0% of your time and effort. Use your energy and your efforts toward the things that make you happy – and you should be at the top of that list. Firmly believing when you feel good, you have the power to helps others feel good around you.

How happy do you want to be this Summer?
We say it all the time, weight loss is hard. But being over weight and unhappy is harder.
It’s always a choice.

4TH OF JULY WEEKEND IS EXACTLY 4 WEEKS AWAY
1 POUND A WEEK = 4 LBS
2 POUNDS A WEEK = 8 LBS
3 POUNDS A WEEK = 12 LBS

These are all doable.  You just have to want it and be persistent.
Make it a priority and work toward it everyday.

If you are persistent you will get what you want
If you are consistent you will keep it

Summer is Coming!

We made it through another Holiday and now our focus should be strictly on Memorial Day and the start of Summer. We have 6 WEEKS until Memorial Day and approximately 10 WEEKS until the FIRST DAY OF SUMMER. Summer shorts, bathing suits, dresses and wearing them to the beaches, BBQ and vacations. 10 Weeks is a long time and a lot can be done. But just like any other time of the year, you have to focus and decide what you want and what you will do to get there.

NO MORE HIDING: There is one thing about summer – regardless of how much weight you gained, you are not hiding under clothes anymore. Summer makes you put out there what you have done. Good or bad it’s for all to see. This is the time – right now – to make a difference.

LONG TERM: One of the things I notice so many people do is they think long term. Which is great when you are planning your savings account but not for your weight loss. It’s too overwhelming. You think – “I can’t eat like this forever” or “It will take me so long to lose the weight”. Instead you should be thinking short term and follow your menu and lose the weight. Don’t think about long term because as you lose the weight your thoughts and body change. You physically need less and will want less but right now every day is a struggle. Your body is used to doing what it wants and now you are training it to do what you say. Just take it day by day and you will see the changes and that will make you motivated to keep going. We can all do the right things to make sure we end up in the place we want. But in order to do it you have to be willing to put your words into actions. It’s easy to say it – now you have to prove it and you have 6-10 weeks to do it.

WHAT CAN 10 WEEKS GET YOU? A LOT!

You know how I love to break down the numbers because sometimes when you see what each week can get you it makes it real. What happens in our crazy life is we are so busy that the days and weeks pass by so quickly we don’t spend them as wisely as we should. It’s all about multi-tasking. While you are working at home or the office; while you are planning parties, or events; while you are taking the kids to school, sports, and end of the year celebrations; and while you are planning your next trip. Whatever you are spending your time on in the next 10 weeks you should also be eating clean, eating healthy and losing weight. It’s that simple. You need to do it – you want to do it – so stop making excuses and make it happen. If you do – this is what you can accomplish in 10 weeks:

1 lb a week   =   6 lbs by Memorial Day
1 lb a week   = 10 lbs by First Day of Summer

* This is so beyond doable.  Follow your menu with your meals and snacks and have your ONE cheat day a week and you will absolutely lose 1 lb a week resulting in 6 lbs by Memorial Day or 10 lbs by Summer! Consistency is key – if you want to get off that roller coaster ride then do it every week and it will add up.

2 lbs a week = 12 lbs by Memorial Day
2 lbs a week = 20 lbs by First day of Summer

*Still very doable.  Follow your menu of meals and snacks and simply cut out a snack when you don’t need it. The current menu that you have that you are following, either take it back one snack a day or one less snack every other day. It’s usually that snack that you know you don’t really need but have it anyway – get rid of it and it will change the numbers. Make sure everything else is 110% to menu consistently through the week!

3 lbs a week =  18 lbs by Memorial Day
3 lbs a week =  30 lbs by First day of Summer

*Challenging but doable. This requires your meals and one snack a day and no mistakes at any time. It requires you to follow and do the right things for the next 6 or 10 weeks without fail. You need to feel a little hungry everyday. Not starving but hungry. One Cheat Day a week and your other 6 days super super clean with no bites, sips or crumbs. You need to be mentally strong and on program and this has to be the most important thing to you at all times. If you treat the program like it’s a job that you want to be amazing at then you will see this kind of amazing loss every week.

I can’t say it enough that the most important thing for you to do is if you have been amazing then continue on your path and be amazing and keep making the fabulous healthy and happy changes you have been making  to your mind and body.  AND if you haven’t been great OR even a little terrible then get back on program and don’t look back. You need to get the new weight off very quickly before it becomes old weight. If you want to make serious changes it can happen in as little as 6 weeks. But it takes you being consistent every week. You have to keep doing the right things over and over again. Yes it’s easy to do the right things for a day or two but in order to see the scale move and keep moving means you have to do the right thing all the time. Doing the right things Day after Day and even having your ONE Cheat Day a week is doing the right thing. IF YOU FOLLOW YOUR PROGRAM AND STAY ON YOUR PROGRAM it will take you to awesomeness!

IF YOU WANT TO BE AMAZING EVERYDAY

YOU HAVE TO ACT AMAZING EVERYDAY

While The Mice Are Away…

It’s funny the saying usually goes “when the cats are away the mice will play”  but for all the camp families it’s more like “while the children are away the parents will play”… BE CAREFUL!!!! When the kids are home they give us more than just love, laughter, and comfort – they also give us a schedule. When they are away we no longer have that schedule that helps keep us on track. Don’t make summer a free for all! Create some boundaries for yourself. Some of my fabulous clients have committed to walking everywhere. When they come to the studio – they walk here. They go out to dinner – they walk there. It’s awesome and something fun to look forward to, not to mention the time it gives you to talk to each other. Other clients have committed to only going out to lunch once a week. Some committed to go out to dinner only on weekends. Find what works for you. Make your own schedule and set your own boundaries that work for you this summer and commit to them.

SUMMER THOUGHTS: When you are trying to lose weight it’s always very difficult. Let’s face it, you have to eat less than your body needs and that can be uncomfortable. No one likes to be uncomfortable. But remember to ask yourself – would you rather be a little uncomfortable from eating less or uncomfortable in your tight jeans 🙁 In addition to eating less and being uncomfortable, you also have to eat cleaner and learn how everything matters. What I want you to understand is this is not something that ever goes away. You don’t lose your weight and then just go back to your bad habits and eat out of control.  I promise you if you do that you will gain the weight back and fast – much faster than it took you to take it off. Living a healthy, clean life is forever. Especially as we age, it’s something that has to be incorporated more than not. While life is about enjoying – it doesn’t always mean that you have to over indulge in every available occasion. STAY MINDFUL.

4TH OF JULYFor some it’s an easy one night out with total control the rest of the weekend. For others it’s a continuous party that can result in an extra 10 lbs! You have to remember you are the only person who is accountable for yourself. If it passes through your lips there is no one to blame but you! It’s not the person throwing the party, or your significant other or your friends…When Tuesday rolls around you want to make sure that you can look back and know that you enjoyed the weekend and feel good about where you are. You don’t want to look back and think Why? Why? Why?

*CHEAT DAY: The later it is in the weekend that you have your cheat day – the more chance you have of staying clean. For example, 4th of July weekend starts on FRIDAY. If you save your cheat day for Sunday or Monday you are more likely to stay clean until then. If you cheat Saturday then you have to stay clean Sunday and Monday which is much more difficult. The same holds true for a non holiday weekend. If you have Sunday for your cheat day everyone goes back on program Monday but if you cheat Friday or Saturday you still have to stay clean Sunday. If you cheat too early you are setting yourself up to cheat again in the same weekend.

TEMPTATION: While you have the opportunity to maintain at any time by simply keeping your days clean and your evenings moderately off – the temptation to over do it will always be there. You have to make a commitment to yourself to not keep falling prey to the temptations that are at every party. Because if you do, you will either keep gaining or never lose. The temptations will always be there. And only when you start losing and feeling great is really when you will be able to push the temptation aside and wait and enjoy your cheat day to indulge. The process is simple:  Everything you see that is tempting have on your cheat day. Stay clean 6 consecutive days, lose weight and then enjoy your cheat day. Remember temptation will always be there and so will your extra weight if you keep giving into it.

BEACH SEASON: Beach season is upon us and while I would hope you will not over indulge on the beach while sitting in a bathing suit, I also know it can be very easy to pick while being social. Make sure you bring foods with volume. Frozen grapes, popcorn, raw veggies, Cheerios, nuts, crepe chips. Anything that will help you stay on program. There is a long summer ahead of you – make sure you pace yourself.

EATING OUT: It’s okay to eat out even if it’s every night. But you need to choose what works for you while you are ordering.  Start with raw veggies instead of the bread. Order grilled chicken or broiled fish with steamed veggies. Sushi is Naruto rolls. Chinese is steamed chicken or shrimp with steamed veggies. It’s not suppose to be exciting. Your cheat day is exciting, the other 6 days is to fuel your body to lose weight. Regardless of where you go there is always a healthy choice.

ALCOHOL: Keep it simple – it’s a snack and unless it’s your cheat day stop after one drink. If it’s not your cheat day, nothing good is going to happen after one drink.

EXERCISE: Keep moving. Walk, jog, ride a bike, lift weights, hike, swim! Whatever you enjoy – do it. Mix it up or do the same thing everyday. Just keep moving.

VACATION: Going on vacation is so much fun. It’s something we look forward to and plan for. Don’t try and go on vacation and lose weight. It’s unrealistic and you are setting yourself up for failure. Instead go with the attitude that you will do your best and enjoy and be mindful when you can. The best case scenario is you eat clean 2 out of 3 meals a day – that should be your goal to maintain.

TIP OF THE WEEK

WHILE YOU are sleeping, drinking, eating, indulging…
SOMEONE is out there awake at 4am exercising.
WHILE YOU are cheating and eating unhealthy
SOMEONE is out there eating clean, and doing all the right things.
WHILE YOU are using the excuses “no time” – “it’s so hard” – “tomorrow”
SOMEONE is out there say “I can, I will, I want it”

Looking and Feeling good is a choice. You either commit to it or you spend your life wishing for it.

Do’s And Don’ts of Summer Weight Loss

Summer is a great time for weight loss. We can show off and enjoy our hard work, and it’s also a strong motivator to keep working towards our goals. In the winter, we hide under layers of clothes and indulge in heavy holiday meals. But now is the time that we can feel lighter and enjoy the weather. But we also have to be careful because when we feel carefree we can lose sight and go off track without realizing how much we can gain. Here are some tips for summer that will also help you stay on track.

DO Stay Hydrated. With the increase in temperatures and hours of sunshine, even just walking to get from point A to point B can cause us to sweat and lose water. Simple activities such as walking, biking, shopping, going to the beach and any other way you enjoy the outdoors can really dehydrate you if you aren’t careful. Be prepared with water and hydrating snacks on hand.  Water is always best. Something with additions like electrolytes or a natural flavor is great, but make sure you aren’t drinking sugar and sodium. Avoid sugary beverages like sports drinks, energy drinks and even some teas and juices. Always pay attention to the labels. You can also choose a hydrating snack like watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew, grapes, apples, celery, and so much more.

DON’T Gain From Drinking. When we drink it’s usually for two main reasons – to hydrate or to enjoy. When we hydrate, we are quenching our thirst and helping fuel our bodies. We need water to live and we are constantly losing water. When we drink to enjoy, we are having a coffee or tea with breakfast, a soda with lunch or a glass of wine with dinner. We drink for the taste, or just out of habit. These type of drinks can be enjoyed and you can still stay on plan, but it takes self control. As we have said many times before, alcohol is one thing but the things we eat and drink are another thing. Sugar, caffeine and alcohol can cause us to crave food we wouldn’t normally eat, especially in the summertime when we are relaxing and enjoying the season.

DO Be careful in the sun. One thing many of us look forward to is the sunshine and getting a tan. Having a little bit of color can make us feel even more confident but it can also have lifelong effects. Cover up and wear sunglasses, and always use sunscreen. Seek shade wherever possible, such a a beach umbrella, awning or cabana. Make sure children and kids always have sunscreen and shade.

DON’T Burn. Premature wrinkles, sun spots, eye damage, sunburn and skin cancer can all be direct results of too much sun and UV rays exposure. Avoid tanning beds and sun lamps – try a self tanning lotion instead. It can also hydrate your skin an give you a natural glow.

DO Enjoy Travel. The free time we get in the summer is perfect for travel. Whether you are planning a family trip or a getaway while the kids are at camp, summer is wonderful for a vacation. Going on a trip is a rewarding and relaxing, and we can to enjoy ourselves when it comes to activities, shopping and eating and drinking. Think about what matters most to you and come up with a plan before you go. Pack healthy snacks, look at menus ahead of time and set your limits for yourself.

DON’T Indulge Beyond Your Limits. Travel also involves long plane rides or train or car travel, which can mean waking up early, staying up late or just having an exhausting day getting somewhere. When we are tired we look for caffeine and sugar to give us a boost, and healthy foods can be limited at airports and during transit. But it’s not impossible and you can follow through on your clean eating. While you are away, be realistic about how you want to eat and what you want to accomplish. Being on vacation can mean staying out late and eating and drinking late into the night. It can also mean big breakfasts and constant munching during the day on appetizers and other treats. When you come back, be prepared for the results and be ready to get back on track.

DON’T Stress. If you let the negativity get to you it will just make it worse. Don’t give up because you think you have failed. You only fail when you stop trying. The last thing you want is to have a terrible summer where you are down on yourself and spiraling out of control. It always sounds easier said than done, but all it takes is one healthy snack or meal to get you back on track. One healthy decision can get moving in the right direction agian. Don’t let one slip up or one bad week make you give up on everything.

DO Stay Motivated. Find what speaks to you and go after it. Whether that is an event or date that you are working towards, or a dress or pair of pants you want to fit into, or maybe you just want this to be your summer where you feel fit and accomplished. Celebrate the little successes and enjoy the progress you make each day and each week. It will all add up and before you know it you will be exactly where you want to be.

Don’t Commit A Memorial Day Offense

WILL YOU BE CHARGED WITH ONE OF THESE OFFENSES THIS WEEKEND?
EUI – Eating under the influence!
EWI – Eating while impaired!
      BWI – Binging while intoxicated!
It has arrived…Memorial Day Weekend is the first holiday weekend that kicks off the summer fun. The parties are planned, BBQ’s are ready, and the pools are all open. White shirts, shorts and sandals are out of closets and ready to be worn…For some, it’s super exciting!! For others, not so much 🙁
It’s the time when layers start peeling. You are either ready or not!
If you are ready and have been doing the right things then you must be super excited! It is just super fabulous and you should be so proud of yourself for putting in the hard work when you needed to!!! You know you will do fine this weekend because you are already in control and have learned what it takes to get to where you are today. Yay!!!
If you are on your way or have recently started or re-started the program – that is super awesome too! It doesn’t matter when or how many times you need to do it, as long as you end up in a great place. So don’t let the weekend get you carried away. Stay on your course and continue to do the right things so come Tuesday you will feel as successful as you do today!
If you haven’t started and wish you had, or you stopped and wish you didn’t – don’t be too hard on yourself because honestly what’s done is done. You can’t go back so you might as well go forward. Have a plan to get back on track 100% on Tuesday and get through the weekend— but don’t over do it because you have been off. Try and make the best choices and do the best you can. It will make starting on Tuesday a much better place to begin.
TOMORROW IS A NEW DAY WITH NO MISTAKES IN IT YET”
DRINKING: Are you drinking this weekend? If so, make sure you know the maximum number of drinks — When do you lose control? After 1, 2 or 3 drinks? You should know in advance when you should stop. Don’t let the situation control you – you must always control the situation. Drink water in between to stay hydrated. If you use a drink as your snack you will be fine. But don’t lose sight that too much of anything will make you gain weight.
KNOW THE DIFFERENCE:

EUI – Eating under the influence means that you have had a drink in replace of your snack but you are okay. You are still in control and know what you are doing and feel good. You know that you are having fun and are still very much in control of the situation around you. You are sipping your drink and using it as a tool to have in your hands so not to pick at the food around you. You are having a blast and even more so because you know you will be thrilled when you wake up the next morning. Eating under the influence is fine and you can do really well with it if you don’t lose control and don’t have that next drink that will put you into an EWI. Know your limit.

EWI – Eating While Impaired. It’s not the alcohol that makes you gain, it’s what the alcohol makes you do that makes you gain. Once you are impaired you no longer realize that you are losing control. Not completely out of control but not in control. You are picking at everyone’s plate and everything that is around you. You are not hungry but don’t have the ability to completely stop what you are doing. You are having fun but you know you ate too much and over did it and that you will not be thrilled with your actions in the morning.

BWI –  Binging While Intoxicated – ugh. Completely lost all control. You start eating everything in sight and speaking louder than everyone around you. It doesnt matter because you don’t feel a thing. You are eating because you can – it doesn’t matter if you are enjoying it or not. You forget that you are on program and you forget that you even need to lose weight!!! You even start to believe that you can do what you want because it’s not affecting you…why? Because you look freaking amazing tonight – Everyone looks amazing when you are drinking!!! The best part of the night is you won’t worry about what you feel like when you wake up. The worst part of the night is you are not worried about how you will feel when you wake up 🙁

If you need another reason to watch how much you drink, you should know excessive drinking does more than just make you over eat. Too much alcohol (wine, beer included) stops the fat burn. It doesn’t only slow your judgment – it actually slows everything in your body. That’s why it’s important to be eating super clean when you drink. If you over do it with the food and the alcohol – it’s not a good mix and you will have a not so happy weight gaining day. Make sure to  keep the food choices clean. The alcohol should be your dessert and your meals should be clean then you will continue to lose instead of maintain or gain.
REMEMBER: It’s okay to say no to any food or drinks that you do not want. Your true friends don’t pressure you. They will just be happy you are there and will want you to do what makes you happy…so try not to use them as an excuse that you had to do something you didn’t want to. Follow the same advice you would give to those you love.

Okay so what do you do if you are not drinking???? OMG! …. What’s left??? HOW ABOUT THE ACTUAL PARTY!!!! Have some fun. Enjoy the company. Play some games, help the host, move around and socialize…DRINK WATER WATER WATER!!! AND STAY HYDRATED! … and really see how easy it is to enjoy yourself without having to over indulge in everything. Only then will you see how much better it is to wake up the next morning and know you had a great time while doing all the best things for your body.

Whether you decide to have one drink or three drinks the most important thing is to make sure you are okay with your choices and always stay in control of who you are and what you want. There is no point in doing something that you will regret later. It’s only fun when you are truly enjoying the moment and know you will be happy with the ending.

Throughout the weekend keep these thoughts close…….

At the center
of your being you have the answer.

You know what it is you really want.
You know your goals and how hard you have worked for them.

More than anyone
You know who you are…
You know the person you want to be…

Only you can
Become that person, Be that person, Remain that person.

Please understand that while these are fun ways to look at what we do while we are under the influence – they are also very serious and brought to your attention to make a point. Whether you are DWI or BWI – drinking  influences your ability to make the right decisions and can affect you and everyone around you. Make good, smart choices for yourself and those you love!

Motivation Monday

Are you ready to start working on your summer body? I hope so, because Memorial day is only 14 weeks away. We all know how super fast that goes. Start today and make every day count. Remember, it’s 6 days on and 1 day off. The 6 days have to be super clean for the 1 day to work. If you just came back from vacation and feel ridiculously up and bloated – the best thing you can do right now is just go back on program. It’s all new weight right now and will come right off if you start back. If you wait and gain on top of this new weight – then the new weight becomes old weight and that my friends will become real fat. So do it now and get it done. You had your fun – it’s time to be back on, feeling in control and knowing that when Memorial day comes around in 14 weeks you will be ready, exited and feeling amazing!

14 WEEKS IN A GLANCE:

LOSE 1 POUND A WEEK = 14 POUNDS

LOSE 2 POUNDS A WEEK = 28 POUNDS

LOSE BETWEEN 1-3 POUNDS A WEEK = 30 + POUNDS

Don’t let the next 14 weeks slip by without making a difference to who you want to be. You are the only person who can do this. I can guide you and give you all the tools you need but you are still the one who has to make the choices. If you don’t need it, don’t eat it! If you mess up, don’t waste a whole day – get right back on and do the right thing – for yourself, your body, your mind and for everyone around you.

“WHATEVER IS GOING ON INSIDE OF YOU CAN ONLY BE CHANGED WHEN YOU DECIDE TO CHANGE IT…it’s not about who you are today…it’s about regretting who you didn’t become.”
