HAPPY OCTOBER!  TIME TO DO THE RIGHT THING FOR YOU!
With the all the holidays…it’s easy to get a little side tracked here and there. But today it’s all about getting back on track 110% and feeling good. Today, right now, this moment, there are no more excuses. It’s literally the easiest time to be back on your path and follow your program.  You have a straight run from now until Thanksgiving – Do not waste it.  Do not hesitate. Regardless of what you may have going on in your life right now do not put it off. The feeling of being in control and doing the right thing will help you through any challenges you may encounter. Yes, we all know it’s hard but it will always be hard if you keep making excuses and keep putting it off. This month is the easier month to pull it together. With everyone back on a schedule and 5 weeks until Thanksgiving you can really make a difference in yourself, and how you feel. You can get control and keep it. You can make a list and follow it. After you have a solid month you will not only feel and look better but you will continue into the Holiday season in such a better place both mentally and physically. After a month on program it becomes effortless. It becomes your life. You will have that wonderful feeling of doing the right thing for yourself and it will make a difference in how you feel and act toward everyone around you.
Let’s keep this short and sweet. Do what you have to do. Follow your program, eat clean, exercise, keep the schedule every day for 6 days with 1 day off. Feel the control – feel the lighter, healthier and fitter body that you want. Each day you will get closer and closer and before you know it, you will enter November in a healthy and controlled mindset that will make you feel and look amazing. You know what you want and when you work toward it everyday it will happen. But the most important thing is you have to start TODAY!
Success is achieved and maintained by those who TRY, And keep TRYING.

Changing Seasons

The transition from Halloween to the beginning of November is the start of the major holiday season. Though Thanksgiving is still a few weeks away, we are now going to be surrounded by Thanksgiving paraphernalia as well as Christmas and Hanukkah decorations, clothes, treats and specialty items. Some of us may want to get caught up in the festive feelings, while some of us are more interested in saving the celebrating for the actual holiday. Now is the time to pick a side. It will be hard for some of us, but we can’t get ahead of ourselves just yet. Holidays can be stressful enough without the added pressure of weight gain if you start giving in to baked goods, candied apples and heavy fall foods now. It is definitely easier said than done, but taking things slow and steady is the best plan right now. This time of year is exciting for so many reasons – family comes together for good food, traditions and celebrations. It is a special time that can catch us with our guard down. Focus on the time you spend with your loved ones instead of the treats and indulgences. The year will be over before you know it so decide now and commit to having the healthiest holiday season possible.

This past weekend was also important for another reason – Daylight Saving Time ended. Though it doesn’t seem like a big deal – if anything we got one more hour of sleep! – but it signals another change in our daily lives. The one hour difference means that the sun will set earlier when the days are already getting shorter. This one hour difference doesn’t take long to adjust to, but it represents something that few of us look forward to – dark, cold winter months. Motivation can plummet and once we are wrapped in layers of sweaters and coats we don’t care much about our weight loss and how we look. Some people even experience seasonal depression, or SAD (seasonal affective depression), which can come and go during the fall and winter. Whether you experience SAD or not, we all know how this time of year can make us feel – low energy, moody, unmotivated. When we get in a funk like this, it can be hard to get back on the horse and give ourselves a fresh start. Though we can’t stop the changing of the seasons, we can prepare ourselves. Find something to keep you motivated such as an event, trip or holiday you are looking forward to. Though you may not be able to show off your body the way you would in the summer, people will still notice the change and you will feel so much better sitting down to Thanksgiving dinner knowing you are in a good place and comfortable. It can even be something as simple as fitting in to an old pair of jeans you have’t worn in years. A little bit of positivity can go a long way.

This is also a great time of year because of all the opportunities to try new things. The weather is still perfect for getting outside – fall is a great time for running and marathons – and soon it will be perfect weather for winter activities like cross country skiing, snow shoeing, ice skating and so much more. If you would rather exercise indoors, get prepared with the proper gear, equipment and accessories. Even just adding beginner yoga or meditation will keep you feeling fit and healthy in the long winter months. This is also a great time to try new recipes and delicious fall foods like butternut squash, chili, sweet potatoes, pears, and tons of vegetables that are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Try making a hearty vegetable soup or tasty side dish. Anything you do to spice up your routine can help you stay motivated and committed.

The year will be over before you know it so decide now and commit to having the healthiest holiday season possible.

Halloween Tricks and Treats

Good news and bad news: Halloween is this Saturday! This can be a good thing because that means if it’s your cheat day then you can really enjoy it with your friends and family, and even be able to indulge in some sweets and still get back on plan. The bad news is, Halloween day can easily turn in to Halloween Weekend with candy and sweets lingering in your home long after the celebration is over.

It’s hard not to be tempted when you are surrounded by candy. Even if you don’t like sweets, it feels like temptation is all around. Don’t throw away all your hard work and give in to something you can have any day. Remember, Halloween candy is everyday candy in little costumes. So that cute little chocolate bar that has a ghost on it is really just a a regular chocolate bar you can buy everyday at the local grocery store.

Halloween is a fun and festive holiday but it is one day. One day that you can enjoy to the fullest and then get right back on your healthy path. The important thing that all of us should focus on is staying clean and healthy up until Halloween. Many of us are probably buying candy and snacks in preparation for parties and trick or treaters, but you shouldn’t start snacking and nibbling ahead of time. Keep it clean, like any other week, and you will make things so much easier when the festivities end. A helpful hint is to buy the candy you DON’T like this way you are not tempted.

If Saturday is your cheat day, enjoy! Remember not to eat everything just because you can. It’s important to eat the treats that you love, not just everything in sight. Mindless eating can become a problem if you let yourself thoughtlessly eat candy after candy. Make it mean something – it’s a treat after a week of eating clean, not just an excuse to eat an entire bag of candy.

If Saturday is not your cheat day, then make you own little trick or treat bag and save it for your cheat day.  Have a plan to stay clean for the day. This is more important than usual because you will be surrounded by reasons to cheat. Be sure to follow your plan and try and eat like you normally do. If you are attending a party, eat something healthy ahead of time if you don’t think there will be anything for you there. You can also make healthy treats, like these:

Banana Ghosts | Feed Your Skull

Banana Ghosts

Pumpkin Dippers (carrots and greens with tooth picks in a bed of hummus)

clementine-pumpkins

Mini Pumpkins

Dyed Hard Boiled Eggs (Boil eggs as usual and let them cool for 30 minutes. Gently crack the shells but don’t break them off. Put the eggs in a Ziploc and cover in food dye. Let the dye soak in for 30 minutes then rinse the eggs and remove the shells.)

Screen Shot 2015-10-27 at 2.42.38 PM

Vegetable Tray

Another helpful tip is to stay active. Trick or Treating is fun and it’s also a great opportunity to walk your neighborhood, be social and watch the kids.  Safety is always first priority. Make sure you check their trick or treat candy.  Keep the kids safe while crossing the roads and always best to be in by dark.

Once the holiday is over, it’s time to get back on track. You can keep the memories and pictures, but the candy has to go. If it is in your home, it will make it that much harder for you to stay clean. Beware of bite sized candy! It can be great when you want to have a taste of something over the weekend, but it can fool you if you keep it around. One little bite sized piece of candy may not seem like a big deal but every bite counts. If you keep some candy for your family and kids, let them pick the treats they love the most that they can have in moderation for the next few days then get rid of the excess. There are a number of great ways to get rid of unwanted Halloween candy: Organizations like Operation Gratitude will use the candy in care packages to soldiers overseas. Many dentists will “buy back” the candy and use it in care packages as well. If you have young kids who have a hard time giving up their candy, some parents use a trick called the Switch Witch. It’s like the Tooth Fairy, but with this trick they leave candy and in exchange they get a small present. You can also tuck the candy away and after a few days you will probably find that out of sight is out of mind.

Have a Happy and Safe Halloween!

Pumpkin Spice Madness

October is pumpkin season! It’s impossible to go anywhere without seeing pumpkin flavored everything – lattes, cookies, cakes, bread, pie, ice cream, yogurt, tea, coffee, oatmeal, pancakes – and the list goes on. The trouble is, they are rarely healthy! Try these recipes to get in on the pumpkin craze this season without derailing your weight loss.

Pumpkin Spice Latte

latte-11

The most popular item of the season, lighter and cleaner. For this recipe, you will need 1/2 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk, 3 tablespoons of pumpkin puree, 1 teaspoon of pie spice, 8 ounces of brewed coffee (or 1 shot of espresso), a sprinkle of cinnamon and sweetener to taste. In a saucepan, mix together the almond milk and pumpkin then cook on medium heat on the stovetop (or microwave for 30-45 seconds). Remove from heat and stir in spices and sweetener then pour into a mug. You can even use a brother or blender to froth the liquid. Add coffee or espresso and a sprinkle of cinnamon and enjoy!

Pumpkin Bean Dip

savory-pumpkin-dip

This recipe is a delicious alternative to hummus. You will need 1 can of pumpkin, 1 can of black beans (rinsed), 1/2 can of cannellini beans (rinsed), 2 tbsp of oil, 2 cloves of garlic, juice from two lemons, 1/2 tsp of cumin, 1/4 tsp of salt and 1/4 tsp of pepper. The best part is how easy it is – simply add all the ingredients to a food processor and blend! Keep it refrigerated until ready to serve. Try them with rice cakes, Ak Mak or Cheese Crisps. It’s great for parties and get togethers!

Pumpkin Seeds

When Halloween comes around, don’t just throw out the unused insides of the pumpkins you carve. Pumpkin seeds are a great snack – a good source of protein, potassium and magnesium. They can also help lower cholesterol and promote good prostate health. You could even add them to a salad or have 1/4 cup as a snack. You can easily remove the pumpkin pulp from the seeds by washing the seeds in a strainer. Make sure they are dry before roasting. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Take the seeds you have and place them in a large bowl. Toss the seeds with oil (1 tablespoon per 2 cups of seeds) then add spices of your choosing. You can try dry barbecue seasoning, curry spices, cinnamon, ginger, chili powder, nutmeg, and more. Once they are coated, spread the seeds out evenly on a baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes, stirring them every few minutes.

Protein Pumpkin Spread

img_0862-version-2-1

This recipe is great for breakfast or a snack. All you need is 3 tbsp of pumpkin, 1 scoop of protein powder (vanilla works great), 1 tbsp of almond butter and a sprinkle of cinnamon. Simply mix all the ingredients together in a bowl and spread 2 tbsp on a slice of whole wheat bread for breakfast or one tbsp on one rice cake or two Ak Mak for a snack – or even 2 tbsp with an apple is delicious.

Halloween Weekend

Halloween is finally here! Time for the full-on rush of kids in costumes, trick or treating and bags full of candy. It’s been on our radar for a couple weeks, but now it’s time to talk about a real plan for this weekend. It’s going to be difficult managing your own eating habits in the next few days, and even more stressful if you’re going to be dealing with over-excited kids hopped up on sugar.

Remember that festivities do not begin until the evening, so eat as clean and healthy as you can all day. Don’t fall off the wagon because it’s a holiday. All of a sudden three days will have gone by that you will have to make up for. When the evening comes, take advantage of trick or treating as a little bit of exercise. Go for long walks and enjoy the decorations and kids in costumes. It’s about more than candy.

When the night finally does come to an end and you have a massive amount of candy that was collected by your kids, it’s time for the second part of the plan. You don’t want to be too strict and take away any enjoyment from them, but you also don’t want to let them eat until they’re sick. Try limiting the number of pieces they can have a day. You can let them choose what they want and keep them from overeating. You can also have them save their candy for dessert instead of a snack. Make sure they have something wholesome and healthy before they get a treat. It will also help to keep their stash out of sight, like in a cabinet or up high, otherwise they will constantly eat or beg for it. Eventually bring back healthier alternatives, like sugar free treats, cereals or trail mix.

All of a sudden it will be Monday and things will hopefully be back to normal. Already it will be November and the beginning of another week. It is crucial that you get back to your weight loss plan and don’t drag out the weekend. Holidays like Halloween are just one day. Don’t get swept up in it for too long. You should also get rid of any leftovers when the time is right. There are several organizations that accept Halloween candy that they include in care packages sent to U.S. Service Members overseas. You can also donate to local soup kitchens. Many dentists and orthodontists participate in candy exchanges where you can turn in candy and get something healthy in return, and the candy usually still goes to troops or soup kitchens.

Have a Happy and Healthy Halloween!

Fall Themed Recipes

Just because you’re eating healthy that doesn’t mean you have to miss out on this season’s popular dishes. There are so many recipes that can work just the way they are or can be tweaked slightly to become healthier versions. Butternut Squash Soup is a classic that just needs a few adjustments. You can use olive oil and soymilk instead of butter, and vegetable stock instead of chicken stock. Be sure to include onion, celery, carrot and even a green apple for their added benefits and more flavor.

 Butternut squash soup

Apples are an easy go-to snack this season, and you can mix it up by making Homemade Baked Cinnamon Apple Chips. Simply cut any flavor of apple into thin slices and sprinkle with a pinch of cinnamon. Bake them in the oven until crisp and enjoy!

bakedapplechips

Sweet potatoes are packed with vitamins and minerals, and baking them to make Sweet Potato Fries is a fun, seasonal treat. Just peel and cut them into strips, toss them with a little bit of oil and seasoning, then put them on a sheet with parchment to bake.

3350565244_96b9a211d1

Keep it simple with Pear-Ginger Applesauce. All it takes is fresh ginger, lemon juice, apples and pears. It’s a sweet and tangy dish packed with immune boosting power from the ginger, fiber from the pears, antioxidants from the apples, vitamin C from the lemon juice and much, much more.

Another fall vegetable brimming with health benefits is the Brussels sprout. They support cardiovascular health, detox and digestion, and even have anti-cancer benefits. Be careful not to overcook them, otherwise they will give off an unpleasant sulfur smell. Cut each sprout into quarters and let them sit out for at least 5 minutes, then steam them for 5 minutes.

Last but not least, get in on the pumpkin spice craze with a Pumpkin Spice Smoothie. Just blend pumpkin, banana, almond milk, vanilla protein powder, cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice and ground ginger until smooth – it’s that simple!

Take Advantage of the Fall Weather

With this season comes many new opportunities to have a happy and healthy fall. The changing leaves and cool weather are just a few reasons to get outside. Hiking, walking, and biking are great ways to enjoy the outdoors with friends and family, or to take some time for yourself. Activities like these help improve your cardio-vascular health and muscle fitness while lowering your risk of some cancers and heart disease, all while helping you reach your weight loss goals. Whether you head to a state park, bike trail or stay in your neighborhood, take advantage of the beautiful weather! Be sure to stay warm and safe out there, such as wearing weather proof clothing for rainy days and something reflective now that it will be getting darker earlier.

So many fun things are in season to share with your family or a group of friends. Check what is offered at farms and orchards in your area and make a day of it. Many places you go will have an abundance of kids games and crafts, as well as activities for any age. Apple picking is a classic, where you can literally eat the fruits of your labor, and a corn maze is a fun way to fit in a healthy walk. Most farms and orchards also feature local and seasonal treats, so one thing to watch out for is temptation. Don’t let these outings lead you astray. Let them be an opportunity to enjoy the season with your family without the regret of eating something you will later wish you hadn’t. And remember, you are on a farm after all – try and find a place that offers fresh vegetables from their own land that you can take home such as cauliflower, eggplant, cabbage, kale, Brussels sprouts, squash and potatoes. So skip the fried donuts and candied apples – you’ll thank yourself later.

Another great way to watch what you eat is to pack a healthy picnic. Many places offer space to lay down a blanket or a number of picnic tables. Keep it fresh with raw veggies and hummus for an appetizer. Lettuce wraps are easy make and healthy, such as light tuna, turkey or grilled chicken. Bring your favorite salad and fresh fruit. Remember to stay hydrated, especially if your day is packed with activities. Bring plenty of water, and maybe some juice or lemonade for the kids and tea in a thermos to warm you up.

As Halloween gets closer, pumpkin picking is sure to be on your list. And if you really want to get into the Halloween spirit, a Haunted House can be a creative way to get your heart pumping. Again, candy and treats will be everywhere but you have to stay strong. Don’t ruin this month’s weight loss accomplishments with unhealthy snacking. Your self-control is a strength, not a limitation. You have chosen to get fit and you’re sticking with it!
