Make The Most of a Snow Day

 

In the next few days New York will be experiencing a major blizzard that is projected to result in a massive amount of snow accumulation and high MPH winds. Several schools have already decided to close and many residents may not be able to get to work. If you find yourself stuck at home in the next few days, or any time you experience extreme weather, there are a couple things you can do to stay safe, healthy and occupied while unable to leave your home.

 

You can still follow your fitness routine even if you can’t get outside or get to the gym. Get in an at-home work out – there are so many options online or on TV for any type of exercise you are looking for. Try searching YouTube or OnDemand for a workout video, search online for blogs or websites with at home workout routines or flip through a fitness magazine to get ideas. If your family is home as well, get them involved. It’s a terrific way to be active and spend time together. You could also try playing a fun game together like charades, Celebrity or Cranium. You’ll fight boredom by being active and you’ll get a good workout from laughing as much as moving your body. You can also use your time to cook up something healthy. If you don’t normally cook it’s a great way to kill time and it can be an entertaining activity for kids. Find something fun to make like zucchini linguini or spaghetti squash, or something where they can add their own toppings like egg white muffins or veggie pizza.

 

When it is safe to go outside, there are so many fun winter activities that are also great calorie burners. Sledding, building a snow man, having a snowball fight, building a snow fort and making snow angels are just a few perfect options for families and smaller children. Ice skating inside or outside, or a game of pick-up hockey are great for older kids and teenagers. If there is a lot of snow, head to a park or bike trail and try snow shoeing or cross country skiing. Both activities are great for enjoying the outdoors and can burn 500 or more calories in an hour. You can even burn calories just from shoveling your driveway or side walk. But be careful not to overwork yourself – strenuous activities like shoveling snow can increase your risk of heart attack. When the temperature drops, our blood vessels narrow to prevent our bodies from losing too much heat. It’s our body’s natural reaction to cold temperatures outside, so when this affect is combined with increased blood pressure from demanding activities, it can put people with heart conditions and people involved in strenuous exercise or activities at greater risk. Here are some ways to prepare yourself before going outside:

 

  • Warm up with stretching or light activity before beginning any laborious activity
  • Layer clothes beneath a windproof and/or waterproof outer shell to maintain body heat
  • Take breaks to give your muscles (especially your heart) a rest
  • Try to always have at least one other person with you during any activity to ensure you are not alone should an emergency occur

 

Winter is a wonderful time of year that offers so many unique ways to enjoy the outdoors – and indoors! – with your family and friends. Be safe and enjoy the snow!

Is Someone Trying to Sabotage Your Resolution?

We’re more than half way through the first month of the New Year and you have probably already faced many obstacles while trying to stick to your Resolution. Going back to school and work after the winter break means eating on the go and that healthy eating usually takes a back seat to a busy schedule. And it can be tough to make time for exercise, especially in the cold weather when it can be hard to find the energy. Difficulties like these can be combatted from within through motivation and encouragement, but sometimes you will find that challenges can come from another person. Your friends and family may seem supportive, but sometimes they think that steering you away from your weight loss will make you happy and more relaxed. They see you eating light and they hear of how you struggle sometimes, so they think that giving you a way out and convincing you to skip that workout or to have that dessert will solve your problems. It can be hard to say no to the people you care about and spend the most time with, but you also have to watch out for people that are trying to sabotage your Resolution.

 

Co-workers may mean well when they come by with that box of donuts or plate of cookies they baked last night, but you have to rise above being tempted in the workplace. The last thing you need is to start rewarding yourself with food when you complete a task or feel stressed at your job. Getting personal at work can be uncomfortable, but there are nice ways to turn down unhealthy food and unnecessary snacks. Just let people know that you don’t have room or just ate, or if you feel the need to take what they are offering, only take a bite or two. So next time your coworkers are passing around birthday cake slices at an office party, have a plan and get through the day without the extra eating.

 

If you don’t find temptation at work, you will most certainly find it at home with your kids and family. You may plan to eat healthy when you come home but your kids probably have something else in mind. They want what they want, and they want dessert too, and you won’t hear the end of it until they get it. Maybe they want to go out for dinner to their favorite place where you know you don’t have many options. It can be hard to juggle your own eating habits with your family’s. You feel like eating healthy doesn’t seem like a priority when you’re eating with other people. This can be especially hard when you’re at a relative’s table when food is personal. If you do feel the pressure to eat, use the tasting method. Just take one spoonful. And remember that when it comes to family meals, it’s about more than food. Don’t focus on what you’re not eating, focus on the time you spend together.

 

Your family and coworkers may understand your choices, but your friends may be your biggest obstacle. They want you to indulge and enjoy things with them. They want to go out for drinks or meet up at a cafe for coffee. When you find yourself in a social situation where eating or drinking certain foods is part of the get-together, you have to do the best you can. Don’t just give up because you think the situation is out of your control. Look for healthy alternatives or go for something that you know is a good choice. Meeting up isn’t an occasion to fall off the wagon. You can also plan accordingly when you have the time. If you know you’re meeting up with a friend for coffee, keep it simple (no sugary syrups or whole milk) and make it one of your snacks.

 

Navigating social situations is part of daily life so it will also be part of your weight loss. It can be tiring to combat your own temptations, and then to add someone else telling you that you should treat yourself to whatever food you want isn’t helpful. They may think that one meal or snack isn’t a big deal, but you work too hard to spoil your resolution. Make it something you are proud of and include the people around.  If they really want the best for you they will understand.

Be Thankful…

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday.  It is a time when friends and family come together and enjoy the company of each other. It’s not about gifts or shopping…it’s a stress free holiday that focuses on great food, lots of laughs and the people we love. I believe it’s a time when many people reflect about the past year and think about all the obstacles and challenges they faced.

 

THIS THANKSGIVING I am truly thankful for many things…..My Three Beautiful Boys who are the air that I breath and the joy and happiness that surround me everyday; My Two Beautiful girls, my boys brought into my life. My Husband who is my best friend, who believes in me and stays true to me in the good and bad times of my life, regardless of how difficult things get or how difficult I am – at the end of the day, he is always there for me.  My Job…as it not only gives me the opportunity to do what I love, it also brings the most wonderful people into my life. For the loved ones I lost. The pain is always there, but I have learned to be thankful for the time I was so truly lucky to have with them.

 

I believe that sometimes we experience the really difficult times in life so we don’t lose focus on what we have that is good and great.  How we must realize that many things we go through are not nearly as unfortunate as others. It’s wonderful to be thankful for all we have, but we should also recognize and pray for those less fortunate – who have lost their homes, jobs and people they love. Think about the families that have dissolved from the stresses of life that were placed before them and loved ones that have passed from illnesses, accidents, military and suicides.   Reflect on the sadness and unfortunate events that are happening in the world today. Our neighbors, who this year have lost spouses, children, jobs…and their hope. Pray that God keeps them safe and gets them through this holiday season.   If you don’t believe in God, then just take a moment in your day to think about them, and have hope for them.

 

This Thanksgiving…learn from your mistakes and strive to be a better person.  Don’t lose yourself and your spirit to those who are angry and bitter – instead give yourself and your spirit to help those who are in need. Tell the people around you how much you love them. Appreciate each breath that you take. Be true to yourself. Be a leader not a follower – and always live, love and laugh like there is no tomorrow. Don’t think or worry about what you don’t have, instead take a look around you, and be thankful for all the wonderful you do have. Reflect and Remember that you are the only person who can make the life you want, and be the person you want to be. Leave yesterday behind and begin a great tomorrow.

Halloween Weekend

Halloween is finally here! Time for the full-on rush of kids in costumes, trick or treating and bags full of candy. It’s been on our radar for a couple weeks, but now it’s time to talk about a real plan for this weekend. It’s going to be difficult managing your own eating habits in the next few days, and even more stressful if you’re going to be dealing with over-excited kids hopped up on sugar.

 

Remember that festivities do not begin until the evening, so eat as clean and healthy as you can all day. Don’t fall off the wagon because it’s a holiday. All of a sudden three days will have gone by that you will have to make up for. When the evening comes, take advantage of trick or treating as a little bit of exercise. Go for long walks and enjoy the decorations and kids in costumes. It’s about more than candy.

 

When the night finally does come to an end and you have a massive amount of candy that was collected by your kids, it’s time for the second part of the plan. You don’t want to be too strict and take away any enjoyment from them, but you also don’t want to let them eat until they’re sick. Try limiting the number of pieces they can have a day. You can let them choose what they want and keep them from overeating. You can also have them save their candy for dessert instead of a snack. Make sure they have something wholesome and healthy before they get a treat. It will also help to keep their stash out of sight, like in a cabinet or up high, otherwise they will constantly eat or beg for it. Eventually bring back healthier alternatives, like sugar free treats, cereals or trail mix.

 

All of a sudden it will be Monday and things will hopefully be back to normal. Already it will be November and the beginning of another week. It is crucial that you get back to your weight loss plan and don’t drag out the weekend. Holidays like Halloween are just one day. Don’t get swept up in it for too long. You should also get rid of any leftovers when the time is right. There are several organizations that accept Halloween candy that they include in care packages sent to U.S. Service Members overseas. You can also donate to local soup kitchens. Many dentists and orthodontists participate in candy exchanges where you can turn in candy and get something healthy in return, and the candy usually still goes to troops or soup kitchens.

Take Advantage of the Fall Weather

With this season comes many new opportunities to have a happy and healthy fall. The changing leaves and cool weather are just a few reasons to get outside. Hiking, walking, and biking are great ways to enjoy the outdoors with friends and family, or to take some time for yourself. Activities like these help improve your cardio-vascular health and muscle fitness while lowering your risk of some cancers and heart disease, all while helping you reach your weight loss goals. Whether you head to a state park, bike trail or stay in your neighborhood, take advantage of the beautiful weather! Be sure to stay warm and safe out there, such as wearing weather proof clothing for rainy days and something reflective now that it will be getting darker earlier.

 

So many fun things are in season to share with your family or a group of friends. Check what is offered at farms and orchards in your area and make a day of it. Many places you go will have an abundance of kids games and crafts, as well as activities for any age. Apple picking is a classic, where you can literally eat the fruits of your labor, and a corn maze is a fun way to fit in a healthy walk. Most farms and orchards also feature local and seasonal treats, so one thing to watch out for is temptation. Don’t let these outings lead you astray. Let them be an opportunity to enjoy the season with your family without the regret of eating something you will later wish you hadn’t. And remember, you are on a farm after all – try and find a place that offers fresh vegetables from their own land that you can take home such as cauliflower, eggplant, cabbage, kale, Brussels sprouts, squash and potatoes. So skip the fried donuts and candied apples – you’ll thank yourself later.

 

Another great way to watch what you eat is to pack a healthy picnic. Many places offer space to lay down a blanket or a number of picnic tables. Keep it fresh with raw veggies and hummus for an appetizer. Lettuce wraps are easy make and healthy, such as light tuna, turkey or grilled chicken. Bring your favorite salad and fresh fruit. Remember to stay hydrated, especially if your day is packed with activities. Bring plenty of water, and maybe some juice or lemonade for the kids and tea in a thermos to warm you up.

 

As Halloween gets closer, pumpkin picking is sure to be on your list. And if you really want to get into the Halloween spirit, a Haunted House can be a creative way to get your heart pumping. Again, candy and treats will be everywhere but you have to stay strong. Don’t ruin this month’s weight loss accomplishments with unhealthy snacking. Your self-control is a strength, not a limitation. You have chosen to get fit and you’re sticking with it!

Healthy Halloween Treats

When you’re faced with the constant push of Halloween candy, what can you do to still make the season fun but also healthy? There are so many fall treats and activities that you can enjoy with your family that can also help you stay on track for your weight loss goals. Everyone knows that pumpkin picking is an essential fall outing, but apple picking is also a great seasonal activity for families and groups where the reward is a healthy snack. Kids will love picking them, and it will make eating them a special occasion every time you’re looking for a snack afterwards. When it comes time to carve pumpkins, don’t just throw away the insides. Save the seeds and bake them in the oven for a tasty snack that is also full of antioxidants and minerals, like zinc. And getting them fresh from the pumpkin means no added salt.

 

Another fun snack to make with your kids is Halloween Trail mix. The basic ingredients are Cheerios, nuts, pretzels, raisins and a little bit of Candy Corn, but you can mix it up with whatever flavor Cheerios you like and any kind of nut, or nuts. You can also add some reduced fat popcorn to the mix. Another candy corn themed treat is a Candy Corn Fruit Cocktail. Just cut pineapples and oranges (or Clementine wedges) into bit-sized chucks, and then layer pineapple then orange in a see through cup with a little whipped cream on top.

Don’t let the orange peels go to waste – you can use them to make Jack-O-Lantern Fruit Cups. Just cut off the top of the orange and hallow it out, then carve a face onto the orange like a Jack-O-Lantern and fill with the fresh fruit of your choosing, like strawberries, grapes and blueberries.

Clementines also make perfect mini pumpkins if you peel them and keep them whole then add a piece of celery to the top as a stem. You can keep going with the fresh fruit with banana ghosts – just cut some bananas in half and add two chocolate chips for eyes and one for a mouth on each half near the end of the banana.

A fun savory dish that could be a great dinner option is Halloween Stuffed Peppers. Simply carve a Jack-O-Lantern face onto the peppers and replaced the top after you carve out the seeds and then cook them as usual.

These recipes are all about putting a healthy spin on Halloween snacks, but also about something more than food. Your kids may try something new, and be proud of something that they picked or made from scratch. It’s more than just unwrapping a piece of candy, you’re preparing something together and eating something you won’t feel guilty about. While it is important to remember to eat healthy, it is also important to enjoy this time with your family. And with these ideas you can do both.

How to Enjoy Your Favorite Dishes During the Holidays

The first of many Jewish holidays this season begins tonight and with it comes several things to look forward to: family gatherings, celebration and traditional foods. Whether this is apples and honey, challah bread or Grandma’s special kugel, here are some tips to enjoying this holiday feast.

 

Start with tasting. Put one tablespoon of any dish you want to try or know you love on your plate. We all know what a tablespoon sized scoop looks like, so be honest with yourself. It may not look like enough but it’s the right place to start. Be more generous with the healthier options you find. Eat the healthier foods first and then go for the heavy dishes and special treats. Saving the best for last can help you eat more of the right foods and you may even skip the less healthy foods you always tell yourself you have to eat. Think of it as a taste testing – if something wasn’t as good as you always remember, at least you only had a tablespoon. And if there was something you really enjoyed and you won’t see again for another year, help yourself to an extra tablespoon. For many of you this may be a two-night holiday so you have to commit to staying in control on not one but two nights. You are the one who controls what foods – and how much – go on your plate.

 

If you find that you don’t want to finish something, remember that it’s okay to leave food on your plate. Take your time and listen to your stomach. Though you may think your stomach is always telling you “More, more!” you might realize that just a taste of certain dishes is all you need. You have to do what’s right for you. People may notice your small portions and insist you take more, and they may see your half eaten plate and say you should finish, but you can’t give in to the pressure to please other people, even if they’re the ones who cooked it. It is important to stay in control especially in social situations when food becomes personal. Stay strong and stay in control!

 

But like we said in the beginning, the food is just one part of this holiday for you to enjoy. Focus on the time you spend with your family and the significance of this holiday: hope for a sweet future and being thankful for the year that is coming to an end. Whether you are celebrating tonight or not, let this be an opportunity to appreciate how far you have come and recommit to your goals.

Healthy Snacks For The Whole Family

In the midst of everyone’s busy schedules packed with work, school, after school activities, social events and errands, planning a healthy snack time can fall through the cracks. This can be true for not only you but for your kids as well. Unhealthy snacking can quickly erase a day of clean eating and exercise, not to mention fill your kids with sugar.

 

When you know it’s going to be a hectic day, throw some almonds or carrots sticks in a baggie for your passengers to munch on in the back seat and stick some in the cup holder for yourself. Snack boxes of raisins or apple slices with to-go peanut butter packets are great for school or work. Easy grab and go bars like Special K Protein bars or Fiber One provide a little bit of sweetness as well as protein and fiber.  For sports, dance or any active extracurriculars, try orange slices or peanut butter and banana sandwiches on whole wheat bread to give them a boost, and always hydrate with water.

 

On days when there’s a little more time to prepare something at home, something as simple as celery with peanut butter and raisins or veggies with hummus can satisfy everyone. Sliced fruit or a bowl of grapes is a great snack to share, maybe with a string cheese on the side. If they’re looking for something salty, try whole wheat pretzels or light popcorn snacks like Skinny Pop.

 

When they inevitably ask for candy or cookies, try something else sweet but smart like sugar free chocolate pudding. Trail mix is also a great alternative, as long as you make sure they aren’t just picking and choosing the sweet stuff! A cup of Cheerios can taste like candy with flavors like chocolate, apple cinnamon and dulce de leche, but they also pack whole grains, vitamins and minerals.

 

Snacking healthy will not only help you with your immediate fitness and weight loss goals, but it will also provide the foundation for a healthy lifestyle for you and your family.

Are Your Kids Making YOU Fat?

Back into the swing of things and we already feel the Snack Closet calling our name. We buy snacks for lunch, snacks for after school and snacks for sports.  Stealing one or two handfuls for yourself and then another for “just in case”. Before you know it, you ate half the bag of Goldfish. If only they didn’t eat those darn Goldfish! If only they ate vegetables and fruits. Not the candy, cakes and cookies…not to mention the ice cream!

 

Do these thoughts sound familiar? Are you constantly blaming your children for making you eat?  As parents, we know how very difficult it is to not buy that cake they love. You know, the one they beg for all the time, and when you buy it they only have one little tiny slice. The cake that you could inhale by just smelling it.  How are you expected to get through each day with all these delicious sweets and treats in the house? You have to take one piece or maybe two. A handful for me and one for you. What choice do you have? Do you have a choice?

 

Let’s think about this more clearly….Who bought the snacks? Are they really all the snacks your children like or are they some that you like as well? Or did you buy them because you like them and hope the kids will take a piece to make you feel a little better about buying and eating it?

 

When we really think about it thoroughly, it’s not the kids who are making us fat, it’s more likely that we are making our kids fat. We buy foods that we know are loaded with calories and sugar, but it’s okay because they are kids, right? When we’re really honest with ourselves, we realize this is not the case and it’s time to make the right choice.

 

Start by keeping the unhealthy snacks out of your home. If an indulgent treat is just a couple steps away, it’s more likely for you to give into it. Not to mention that giving in to your kids’ cravings is creating bad eating habits they may carry with them their whole life.

 

Next, lead by example. Show them that eating healthy is something to be proud of, not a way to punish yourself for bad behavior. When you start making healthy choices it will affect the people around you, especially your kids.
