College Tips and Tricks to Keep You Focused

Back to school is always a bitter sweet time for parents and kids alike. Most of us don’t want summer to end, but there so many things about the fall to look forward to. This can be especially true for college students and their families. Whether your child commuting from home or going away to school, the transition from home and school to college is especially exciting and emotional. As a parent, you want your kids to make smart choices – study hard, make good friends, enjoy themselves and be healthy. Being a young person out on your own during your college years can be a fun and chaotic time, and often eating healthy is the last thing on your mind. Here are some tips to help get you through the year healthy and in control.

The biggest concern with overeating and unhealthy eating in college is stress. Whether you are a well-adjusted senior or an anxious freshman, we all experience stress in our college years. Stress eating can be caused by so many things in college – homework, studying, finals, time management, professors, class schedules, friendships, relationships, jobs, being homesick, moving to a new city or state, worries about the future, graduation, etc. Unfortunately stress is unavoidable in college, as well as in life, so this is a great time to get your eating habits under control. The important thing to remember is that stress won’t solve the problem – it will just keep your mind off of it for a little while. Instead of turning to food, seek out some problem solving solutions. If you have too much on your plate, make a to-do list and prioritize your tasks. If you are procrastinating, maybe you need to study or work in a different location away from distractions. If you are feeling burnt out, take a break and do something that you enjoy. If you need help, reach out to an advisor, professor or friend. Find something that works for you and be prepared for when stress strikes.

A great way to fight stress eating is to have healthy meal and snacks options on hand. Find your staples at your dining hall, nearby restaurants, local deli or grocery store or order food online. It may seem like you don’t have the time or energy to seek out healthy food options when you have so many other things to worry about, but eating healthy will actually help keep you feeling mentally and emotionally strong. Poor eating habits will maybe satisfy your cravings in the short term, but in the long run you will just feel more tired and sluggish at the end of the semester. Even if you don’t have access to a mini fridge or kitchen you can still eat healthy. Find nonperishable items or items that can be kept at room temperature such as nuts, trail mixes, protein bars, peanut and almond butter, whole wheat bread, cereal, apples, rice cakes, roasted edamame, bananas, oranges, healthy chips, crackers and popcorn, roasted chick peas, and much more. If you do have a mini fridge, you can add Greek yogurt, more fruits and vegetables, hummus, cheese, turkey, skim milk, cottage cheese, mustard, tuna, ripe avocados, sugar free pudding and more – including foods that you order in or pick up locally or from the dining hall. You might even get lucky and find that Mom and Dad send you a healthy care package with snacks and supplies 🙂 Having healthy options in your room is also going to be helpful during those all-nighters when you are looking for sugar and caffeine. Consuming sweets and energy drinks may keep you up, but they will also cause you to crash and feel terrible the next day. It is much better to go for something healthy when you need something to perk you up. If you do have a kitchen, stock up on some cooking basics like eggs/egg whites, oil and vinegar, salt and pepper, dry spices, vegetable soups, cooking spray, frozen vegetables, etc. Even if you don’t have experience, find some easy recipes and cook for yourself.

It may take a week or two for you to get into your routine and find what works for you. Navigate your class and work schedule and find the times during the day to eat snacks and meals that work for you. Each day might be different depending on your schedule, but soon everything will fall in to place. On days when you are away from your dorm or apartment all day, pack healthy snacks to get you through the day so you aren’t stuck with what’s in the vending machine. If you have breaks and are able to buy or make yourself something, make sure you know your options. The dining halls can be tricky because you never really know what will be available. Familiarize yourself with portions and ingredients and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Hopefully you will have access to a salad bar, which is always a great choice. Seek out protein with minimal sauce like chicken or turkey. When all else fails, having breakfast for dinner like egg whites or whole wheat toast with peanut butter and fruit can be perfect options if they are available to you. And don’t feel like you have to eat plate after plate just because you can.

Lastly, remember that it’s up to you to find the balance between eating and activity. You can sit in your room all day and eat whatever you want but you will feel so much better physically and mentally when you have control over your eating habits. Classes and exams may get out of your control at times, but that doesn’t mean that you have to spiral out of control with your eating too. Having control and discipline over one part of your life may help you find the strength you need when other things stress you out and get you down. Also remember that none of us are perfect all the time. If you make a mistake or stray from your plans, it’s okay. Don’t let healthy easting become another stress in your life. Do your best in all things and do what’s right for you.

Don’t Let Exercise Drop in the Cold Weather

Your commitment may be strong right now but it can be hard to find motivation in the cold weather to get active. Leaving the house can feel like a battle and at the end of the day all you want to do is get inside and curl up on the couch. There seems like no right time to fit in a workout or go to the gym, and any time you spend outside you want to keep to a minimum. But hibernating in the winter will just make you feel even more sluggish and lethargic, and when spring comes around you will have to start all over again. Don’t let this time go to waste. There are a variety of ways to stay active inside and outside this fall and winter that can crush any excuse.

Think it’s too cold to exercise? According to expert doctors in a paper published in 2006, it is never too cold outside as long as you dress properly and keep moving. As long as you keep moving, you are producing heat. As for your workout attire, be sure to cover all parts of your body from your ears to the tips of your fingers to avoid frostbite, but don’t overdress. This can cause you to overheat and sweat more, which in the end can make you colder. Another myth is that the cold air can damage your lungs or cause asthma symptoms. This is also not true – by the time the air reaches your lungs it is at body temperature. The air may cause irritation, but it is because of the dryness, not the cold. This is related to another important tip: don’t forget to hydrate. You may not want to drink water because you are cold, but the dry environment just means you need it more. So if you like to walk or run, keep it up! And when the snow falls, stay safe but enjoy the opportunity. Build a snowman with your family or try something new like cross country skiing or snowshoeing.

And even if you aren’t able to get outside, you can still stay fit. There are so many indoor workouts that you can do from the comforts of your home with little to no equipment. Working out at home is convenient, comfortable, available around the clock and you don’t need a membership. We have a list of easy workouts here: https://innovationweightlossandfitness.com/portfolio/4230/ or you can find a wide variety on our Pinterest page: http://www.pinterest.com/innovationny/.

You can search specifically for a workout that fits any criteria: stretches to help you sleep, workouts to tone your inner thighs, ways to strengthen your ankles and avoid injury, different levels of plank poses, office workouts, pool workouts, winter workouts and much more. You can also find workouts that involve objects in your home such as a chair, couch or bed. If you choose to invest in an exercise machine or workout equipment, or already own something, you can find great workout routines to give your exercise direction and a goal.

So when you’re looking to warm up this winter, head to the gym, the outdoors or turn to your at home workout, not the couch.

Don’t Get Caught Up In Festive Eating

So you’ve gotten through Thanksgiving weekend and whether you are happy with how the holiday went or not, it’s time to get back on track. It’s easy to get caught up in festive eating all weekend and beyond when it comes to leftovers and seasonal foods, but it’s important to get out of the holiday haze. This time of year can provide you with plenty of excuses to overeat or fall off the wagon, OR it can strengthen your resolve and sense of self-control. Confidence and determination will help your mood and subsequently, your success. Anxiety and regret can cause you to stress eat under pressure. It can be an unfortunate cycle that can intensify during the holidays, but preparing before and getting your momentum back after are just as important as what happens during a holiday.

This is going to be especially true this month with two of the biggest holidays of the year just a few weeks away. And with a fresh start around the corner on January 1st, many people feel tempted to just give up and start over in the New Year. December can be the hardest month of they year for these reasons and many more, but there are a few things you can do to keep yourself in the right mindset.

One of the best ways to ensure that you’ll have a good day is by starting with a healthy breakfast and/or exercise. Even if it’s a simple meal or a short workout, the morning will set the stage for the rest of your day. During the day look for healthy alternatives in ordinary situations. Try taking the stairs instead of an elevator or escalator when possible, choose the healthiest option even when dining out (consult our Healthy Restaurant Choices page), and make sure you’re getting enough water when you may want to choose something warm like coffee or hot chocolate. Get excited about exercise – make a new playlist to listen to during a workout, try a new class or activity, or get involved with a friend or family member.

Remember that we have plenty of healthy recipes on the blog in the “healthy recipes” tag (https://innovationweightlossandfitness.com/tag/healthy-recipes) or on the coldest days when you can’t make it to the gym or outside, there’s the at home workouts here: https://innovationweightlossandfitness.com/tag/healthy-recipes/. This is an important month – make it count!

Staying Hydrated in Cold Weather

Now that fall is in full swing there may be things about your daily life and routine have changed since the warmer weather, but one thing that should always stay the same is drinking water consistently throughout the day. In the summertime it is easy to tell when you’re getting dehydrated, and nothing cools you down like a tall glass of ice water. But in the fall and winter months we are less inclined to drink water. It may feel like the last thing you want is something cold to drink, but the effects of dehydration can really take a toll in the colder months. In colder temperatures, your body will focus more on maintaining its core temperature and less on fluid balance. You body won’t alert you when it needs water as often as it should, so you have to take the initiative and stay hydrated.

Dehydration occurs when you lose more fluid than you take in, and our bodies are constantly losing water from perspiration, exercise and even breathing. Dehydration has a lot of negative side effects, such as thirst and dry mouth, but can also include sleepiness or tiredness, headaches, dizziness or lightheadedness, and dry skin. In this case, dry skin refers to dehydrated skin. The difference is that dry skin lacks oil and dehydrated skin lacks moisture. Dehydrated skin is especially likely because of the cold weather and can be characterized by irritation, inflammation, itchiness and sensitivity; a feeling of tightness or tautness; a look or feel of roughness; slight to severe flaking or scaling; and fine lines, severe redness and cracks. To keep these symptoms at bay, always keep bottled water or your own reusable water bottle on hand.

Not all bottle water is created equal. Pay attention to the thickness of the bottle and where it comes from when choosing a bottle water brand. You may have noticed that some bottled water packaging is getting thinner. This thinner, lower grade plastic may be better for the environment but it’s not better for your body. Some bottles are at risk of leaching, meaning that chemicals in the plastic can affect the water after a certain amount of time. This is a big reason why you shouldn’t reuse disposable water bottles. Many brands display where their water comes from on the packaging, but for others you might have to do some research. If a brand says “from a municipal source” or “from a community water system” that means it was derived from tap water. If it is difficult to find information about a bottled water brand then you probably shouldn’t be drinking it. Find a brand with a known protected source and one that makes testing and treatment information that shows high water quality readily available. Our top pick is Smart Water. It fits all this criteria, and it also has the added benefits of electrolytes. Electrolytes, or ionized minerals, are important because they are what the cells in your body use to carry electrical impulses, like nerve impulses and muscles contractions, across themselves and other cells. This means they help your body run at optimal levels, and an electrolyte deficiency can cause cramping. That is why hydration and electrolytes are so important during and after a workout, especially in the winter months. Smart Water contains the electrolytes calcium, magnesium and potassium without any sugar, calories, fluoride or sodium.

If you would rather go with a reusable water bottle, there are a couple things to consider. They can be made from a variety of materials such as plastic, stainless steel, aluminum and glass. They each have their pros and cons. For example, plastic is durable, light and inexpensive, but can have a plastic taste and chemical leaching is a possibility. To avoid this, get a bottle that is BPA free. Fill it with filtered water, clean it often and dispose of it when it is no longer usable.

It is important to remember all this when performing seemingly simple activities like raking leaves, shoveling snow or holiday shopping on a hectic day because they will quickly dehydrate you. Get in the habit now and ensure you have a healthy winter!

Why You Should Be Drinking Lemon Water

By now you have probably heard, read or been told to drink warm lemon water as part of your weight loss plan and for a healthy life in general, but do you really know why? Just 12 oz of hot or warm water with lemon each day can offer you a long list of benefits that will keep you body healthy inside and out.

When you think lemon, the first thing that may come to mind is Vitamin C. Lemons are an excellent and rich source of this vitamin that is essential to the body in so many ways. Firstly, Vitamin C is vital to the function of a strong immune system. This nutrient helps protect from deficiencies that can get you sick, and it can help fight off colds, flues and even recurrent ear infections. Vitamin C also neutralizes free radicals as it travels throughout your body. Free radicals are molecules with unpaired electrons, and in their mission to find another electron they can cause damage to the surrounding molecules in your body. Free radicals can interact with healthy cells of the body, damaging them and their membranes, and can also cause inflammation, or painful swelling, in the body. This is one of the reasons that Vitamin C has been shown to be helpful for reducing the symptoms of some types of arthritis by reducing pain and inflammation in joints and knees. Vitamin C helps with maintenance of healthy bones, connective tissue and cartilage. Free radicals can damage blood vessels and can change cholesterol to make it more likely to build up artery walls, which is why Vitamin C can be helpful in preventing the development and progression of diabetic heart disease and atherosclerosis (a disease in which plaque builds up inside your arteries).

Lemons offer not only a high level of vitamin C, but is also a great source of nutrients like citric acid, potassium, calcium, phosphorus and magnesium. Citric acid is an antioxidant that plays a role in fighting free radicals. It also helps prevent the build up of mineral compounds that can cause kidney stones. Potassium helps nourish brain and nerve cells, and also helps control blood pressure.

You will also get digestive benefits from lemons. They stimulate and purify the liver, and aid in the production of digestive juices. They are also great at cleansing the body of toxins and can help reduce the amount of harmful bacteria in your body.

They also offer some external benefits: lemons can keep your skin healthy and clear by preventing the formation of wrinkles and acne.

So what are you waiting for? Next time you are at the grocery store, look for lemons that are heavy for their size. This means they have a thinner skin and more meat to them. They should be fully yellow in color with no green, soft or hard patches. They will stay fresh at room temperature for about a week.

This season when you are looking for something warm to drink, treat your body to a simple, healthy cup of lemon water.

Fall Themed Recipes

Just because you’re eating healthy that doesn’t mean you have to miss out on this season’s popular dishes. There are so many recipes that can work just the way they are or can be tweaked slightly to become healthier versions. Butternut Squash Soup is a classic that just needs a few adjustments. You can use olive oil and soymilk instead of butter, and vegetable stock instead of chicken stock. Be sure to include onion, celery, carrot and even a green apple for their added benefits and more flavor.

Apples are an easy go-to snack this season, and you can mix it up by making Homemade Baked Cinnamon Apple Chips. Simply cut any flavor of apple into thin slices and sprinkle with a pinch of cinnamon. Bake them in the oven until crisp and enjoy!

Sweet potatoes are packed with vitamins and minerals, and baking them to make Sweet Potato Fries is a fun, seasonal treat. Just peel and cut them into strips, toss them with a little bit of oil and seasoning, then put them on a sheet with parchment to bake.

Another fall vegetable brimming with health benefits is the Brussels sprout. They support cardiovascular health, detox and digestion, and even have anti-cancer benefits. Be careful not to overcook them, otherwise they will give off an unpleasant sulfur smell. Cut each sprout into quarters and let them sit out for at least 5 minutes, then steam them for 5 minutes.

Last but not least, get in on the pumpkin spice craze with a Pumpkin Spice Smoothie. Just blend pumpkin, banana, almond milk, vanilla protein powder, cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice and ground ginger until smooth – it’s that simple!

Take Advantage of the Fall Weather

With this season comes many new opportunities to have a happy and healthy fall. The changing leaves and cool weather are just a few reasons to get outside. Hiking, walking, and biking are great ways to enjoy the outdoors with friends and family, or to take some time for yourself. Activities like these help improve your cardio-vascular health and muscle fitness while lowering your risk of some cancers and heart disease, all while helping you reach your weight loss goals. Whether you head to a state park, bike trail or stay in your neighborhood, take advantage of the beautiful weather! Be sure to stay warm and safe out there, such as wearing weather proof clothing for rainy days and something reflective now that it will be getting darker earlier.

So many fun things are in season to share with your family or a group of friends. Check what is offered at farms and orchards in your area and make a day of it. Many places you go will have an abundance of kids games and crafts, as well as activities for any age. Apple picking is a classic, where you can literally eat the fruits of your labor, and a corn maze is a fun way to fit in a healthy walk. Most farms and orchards also feature local and seasonal treats, so one thing to watch out for is temptation. Don’t let these outings lead you astray. Let them be an opportunity to enjoy the season with your family without the regret of eating something you will later wish you hadn’t. And remember, you are on a farm after all – try and find a place that offers fresh vegetables from their own land that you can take home such as cauliflower, eggplant, cabbage, kale, Brussels sprouts, squash and potatoes. So skip the fried donuts and candied apples – you’ll thank yourself later.

Another great way to watch what you eat is to pack a healthy picnic. Many places offer space to lay down a blanket or a number of picnic tables. Keep it fresh with raw veggies and hummus for an appetizer. Lettuce wraps are easy make and healthy, such as light tuna, turkey or grilled chicken. Bring your favorite salad and fresh fruit. Remember to stay hydrated, especially if your day is packed with activities. Bring plenty of water, and maybe some juice or lemonade for the kids and tea in a thermos to warm you up.

As Halloween gets closer, pumpkin picking is sure to be on your list. And if you really want to get into the Halloween spirit, a Haunted House can be a creative way to get your heart pumping. Again, candy and treats will be everywhere but you have to stay strong. Don’t ruin this month’s weight loss accomplishments with unhealthy snacking. Your self-control is a strength, not a limitation. You have chosen to get fit and you’re sticking with it!

BACK TO SCHOOL – BACK TO YOU!

Vacations are coming to an end and the children are back at school…now it’s time to get back to you. Why wait until New Year’s to make a resolution to lose weight and be healthy? September is a perfect month to start a “New You”.

With long work hours and after school sports here are a some IMPORTANT TIPS to make sure your September schedule is a healthy one that works for you:

1) PLAN YOUR WORKOUT IN THE MORNING:  When you plan to do your workout first thing in the morning you have an 80% chance of actually doing it. On the flip side, if you don’t do your workout first thing in the morning, you have an 80% chance of NOT doing it!

When we start with a morning workout, we are much more likely to have a better nutritional day. Why? Because mentally you have put yourself on track for the day. You will not want to ruin your hard work and effort with an unhealthy snack or meal.

If you are a stay-at-home parent, get the kids off to school and head to the gym. Don’t put it off until after you clean the house or get the laundry done. Before you know it, the kids will be getting off the bus as quickly as they got on. Head right to the gym. Follow up by running your errands and then head home and do your housework.

If you are a working parent, make the effort to get up an extra hour early and get your workout in.  It will change the dynamic of your day from okay to awesome! While I understand how difficult it can be to add an extra hour to your day, I can assure you it’s worth it, both mentally and physically. Your body will get used to it and in return, that extra hour will actually make you feel more healthy and energetic throughout the day.

2) REMEMBER: WORKOUTS ARE IN ADDITION TO HEALTHY FOODS, NOT IN REPLACE OF:  What exactly does that mean?  You are doing your workout so you can be healthy. If you want to lose weight in addition to clean eating it will help you lose even more weight; HOWEVER, you are NOT working out so you can eat whatever you want all day…AND you are NOT working out so you can eat more food throughout the day (even if it is healthy food – it’s still more). Workouts are to keep your body, mind, muscles and bones healthy and toned. In addition to a healthy eating plan, it will help you lose even more weight.

3) KEEP MOVING: When you are with your kids at after school sports, make sure you are not sitting, chatting and watching them. Even if you already worked out in the morning, grab some of the moms and dads and walk around the track or field. Unless it’s a game, you don’t need to watch your child practice. They have coaches to tell them how to play. They only need mom and dad to tell them what a great job they are doing and how amazing they are.

4) PLAN YOUR MEALS IN ADVANCE: Don’t ever start the day by winging it. If you don’t know what you are going to eat each day, it will most likely turn out bad.  Either the night before or the morning of, make sure you know exactly what you are going to eat. Plan it out: You should know what you are eating for your meals and snacks each day. If you don’t know, you can quickly turn a healthy day into an unhealthy day all because of lack of planning. More importantly, when you don’t plan it out, it sometimes means mentally you know you will go off that day. That’s why you don’t want to think about it. So make sure you know exactly what you are going to eat from the time you wake up until you go to bed. When you are proactive it will make all the difference in your day.

When you incorporate some time for yourself into your schedule you can really make a difference in how you look and feel. No one said it’s easy to be healthy and fit, but everyone will tell you it’s worth it.
