COUNTDOWN …… Keep the Focus!

As we travel through the last two weeks before the Holiday Break  many of you are very much on your healthy weight loss path and others are still struggling a little to get to where you want to be.  Wherever you are today and moving into this week I want you to be positive and confident about what you can achieve and why you want to do it.  Don’t only focus on your number — instead focus on staying on program, having the control that makes you happy, and how much it all makes you feel good.

FOCUS:  With so many holiday parties and gatherings before vacation if you are struggling focus on doing the very best you can because at the end of the day maintaining is better than gaining.

FOCUS:  Even being on program between holiday parties is better than being off program all together.  Just keep reminding yourself if you weren’t on program and weren’t watching and being mindful where would you be.  That’s a scary thought for many.  But knowing that you may not be doing your very best but doing the best you can right now is what matters and what will keep you from gaining — and sometimes that is enough.

What’s the point? — The holiday is in less than two weeks and I have so many parties in between what is the point of trying right now?  The point is very simple you are either going to go in a happy positive place where you at the very least feeling  de-bloated or a place that you feel out of control and very uncomfortable — choose your hard!

FOCUS:  You can still lose a couple of pounds before you leave but even more important you will leave and start the holiday feeling lighter and in control over your day and that can really make the difference in how you feel, act and enjoy  your holiday, vacation and everyone that loves you.

FOCUS:  Don’t worry about where you weight is today — don’t even think about it.  Just follow your program and you will feel better tomorrow.  Whether you are leaving in one week or two — if you stay on program and keep moving forward everyday  you will feel better and better.  Whether you are staying home or going on vacation — feeling lighter and in control is where you want to be and how you want to feel.

The Journey — Something I think is important to share is how important your journey is.  I know I say it all the time but it’s very easy to get caught up in feeling sorry for yourself and bad about the mistakes and choices you make. But the Innovation journey of weight loss is based around real life. That’s why we have a cheat day.  So we don’t beat ourself up when we want to enjoy something we love.  We have to remember we are not always going to be amazing every single second of every day.  But what I want you to focus on is how happy you are on the journey to feeling your best.  Every step you take in the direction of eating clean and losing weight is one more step to feeling great both mentally and physically.   And while you are taking those steps — (slow or fast – turtle or shark) — keep the focus on all the happiness in your life —and start with the Happiness of the Holiday Season and being around those you love.

Happy Holidays

HAPPY HOLIDAYS:  The holidays are here and many are getting ready to celebrate and others vacate. Whatever you are doing or where you are going, I want you to keep in mind some very important things. As you know I always say planning is a big part of your success. The best way to plan is to do it the day before so you know what you are doing and/or where you are eating the day of. If you know that your lunch and dinner will be too far apart make sure to have a snack in between. In order to have a snack you need to have access to one. You don’t want to get to the point of being over hungry because then you will lose control and not be able to come back from it. This is a very difficult time of year for weight loss and you can make it less difficult if you plan accordingly.

IMPORTANCE OF SNACKING: Make sure you have your snacks and use them when you need them. If you are hanging out by the pool make sure you have the vegetables and hummus so you don’t go for the nachos. Sometimes we can forget the importance of snacking. Once a upon a time it was thought that if you ate before a meal you would ruin your dinner. But the truth is, if you DON’T have a snack before a meal you will not only ruin your meal but also your weight loss. Why? Because you will be so hungry you won’t be able to make a healthy choice. You will reach for everything and you will eat fast and too much before you even realize what happened. But when you have a snack before you go out and feel a little satisfied when you get to dinner you will not act like it’s your last meal. You will immediately see the difference in how you feel and how you can control your choices. So make sure you have your snacks available and use them when you need them – that’s what they are for.

YOUR ACTIONS DETERMINE YOUR RESULTS: Remember that throughout the next two weeks you are responsible for what you do. Whatever your choices are will result in your outcome. We sometimes forget that holidays and vacations have an ending. When we are in the moment of enjoying and celebrating we forget that reality is around the corner. I want you to enjoy and celebrate – it’s wonderful and you should continue to do that. It’s one of the most important things about working so hard all year. What fun is being thin, healthy and feeling great if you can’t go out and enjoy it and show the world how amazing you feel. With that said, you must also keep in mind this is not the last vacation or holiday you will have. When it’s over you want to feel just as good as when it started. The best way to do that is to think about your actions and the outcome. When you grab for something – do you really want it? Or are you eating it because you are on vacation? Always think before you grab and eat. Remember, whatever you do today you have to deal with tomorrow. If you are okay with it then go for it, but if you know that it’s going to make your first week of the New Year miserable then don’t do it.  There are not too many things that are worth that and you need to keep that in mind when you are grabbing and consuming. Remember how hard you have worked for where you are today and regardless of who or what is around you, at the end YOU will be the one who is either stuck or content with the outcome of your choices. No one has that power except you.

LOSE WEIGHT- MAINTAIN – GAIN

Through the holidays and on vacation the choices to Lose weight – Maintain – or Gain is ultimately up to you.  Here are some things to follow to determine where you would like to end up:

VACATION:

LOSE WEIGHT: You can stay on your course of eating clean 6 days and save everything you see on vacation throughout the week for your Cheat Day.  If you do this try and save the Cheat Day for the last day you are there – this way you look and feel amazing all week and you can see the things throughout the week that you would like to have on your Cheat Day.

MAINTAIN:  Have a Cheat meal, a dessert or drinks each day.  You can’t do all three, it has to be one of the three if you are having a Cheat everyday. This will help you maintain. It teaches you that you can enjoy but you just can’t treat everyday like a full Cheat Day.

HOLIDAYS:

LOSE WEIGHT: With two back to back holidays in one week [Christmas eve – Christmas Day] and [New Years Eve – New Years Day], you have the choice of picking one each week and having your one Cheat Day a week. If you do that you will continue to stay on your path and lose weight. Sometimes it’s easier to continue what you know and what you feel comfortable with. For those who do not celebrate both it’s an easier decision,  but for those who do celebrate both you should think about maintaining…

MAINTAIN: While the back to back holidays are little difficult there is an easy solution to get through them and maintain. Keep your days clean and enjoy your feast at night. If you like a big Christmas morning breakfast then you can have your feast Christmas eve night and again Christmas day morning but all the other meals of both days must be clean and on program. So basically it’s two full meals with desserts and drinks if you choose. If you do this for two back to back days you will maintain. Of course like any other Cheat Day you WILL NOT go on the scale the next day. You will enjoy, go right back on program the next day and weigh in the following week and you should be the number you were before the holiday began.

My final thoughts to you for the next two weeks – is to live a life that you are proud of.  If at any time you find that you are not proud of what you are doing – find the strength to start over. It’s important to enjoy and have fun and celebrate. It’s the reason why we work so hard to eat clean and feel good in between the special occasions. Just always stay mindful, have a plan and remember you are creating memories with those you love. You want them to be memories that you can all look back on with love and joy. Remember that how you treat yourself will reflect in how you treat others. When you are happy they are happy and when you feel good they feel better. Appreciate the beauty of the world, and appreciate what you worked so hard for. Do not ruin your holidays or ruin it for those you love because you over did it and can’t wait for it to end. Instead, throughout the next two weeks, be the person that makes you happy and act in ways that you know will make you feel your best.  If you fall off your path get up and immediately back on program. Be the person that you worked so hard to be and remember the person that you want to see January 1st. Enjoy the life, the love and the happiness that you have and always, always have hope in your hearts for those less fortunate.

The kitchen is located in a town that has many underprivileged families. They don’t have much food and toys are not an option. The soup kitchen informed us that last year because of our donation – on Christmas Eve they were able to send hundred of families home with a goodie bag of Innovation food and a toy for each of their children. So on Christmas morning we fed people who could not afford to eat and YOU all gave children a gift to open who wouldn’t have had one. This is not just about dropping off a gift, it’s about making a true difference in someone’s life. We sometimes get caught up in our own little world and forget how a little act of kindness can make such a big difference for those in need. And on a day that is filled with hope, your gift makes such a big difference for both parents and children on Christmas Morning.

Thank you in advance for being a part of something so special with us.

Where Will You Be on the Next Holiday Break?

Thanksgiving is behind us. Another Holiday has come and gone. As we look forward to our next Holiday Vacation we must use these next 4 weeks very wisely. Because depending on how your last 5 days went and the text messages I received – many of you are in very different places. Some had every intention on staying 100% on and unfortunately your path went in a very wrong direction. Others were expecting the worst and ended up with the best. For some, you had your plan and stuck to it with a 90-10 and ended up doing much better then you could have imagined. Then of course I have my hard-core, who stick to it regardless of what is going on. They never stray from the eat clean 6 and indulge 1. Regardless of what good or bad goes on in their day, they are never stressed about their weight because they always do the right thing.

Where will you be on Holiday Break? It’s always great to have a big goal. But you need little goals in between. Each little goal you reach is a step closer to the big goal. Start today by having a 100% week. Put yourself – body and mind – to the test.  How much can you lose this week? Remember everything you do is for now. It’s not forever. It’s simply to get the weight off. Once the weight is off you are no longer restricting yourself and you can eat more and maintain. But for right now, it’s all about losing. Getting to a good happy place by Holiday Break.

Mentally get into a good place – Losing weight is important to you for your health and happiness. For one week you will be 100% and see what your body does in return. For one week you will say “No” to anything that is tempting because it’s not worth the result. For one week you will be 100% focused on losing weight and not let anything get in your way. This week is about you and what you want for your body and health.

Visualize – where will you be on Holiday Break? Beach, Island, somewhere special – any of these places should be motivating enough to know that you will either be in a bathing suit or shorts and you want to feel good about wearing them and not hiding and wishing you would have done something when you had the chance. Keep this thought in your mind. Yes, you really can change a lot in 4 weeks!

Are you staying home?  Even more reason to do it now. You don’t want to be around so many delicious holiday choices with friends and family and not be able to enjoy it because you are in a bad place to begin with. Start today so you can enjoy later.

If you take the baby steps now and get your number down each week you will feel lighter, in control and most important, healthy and good about yourself when the Holiday comes – everyone will be celebrating and you will too!

LET’S REVIEW:
What happens when you follow your menu and eat clean foods:
– The first two days are the most challenging – get through them however you have to because I promise by the third day you will begin to feel amazing. Think of it as you over did it and this is what you have to do now. Give and take. It’s time give time.
– The 3rd day the cravings are starting to disappear and you begin to feel in control.
– By the 4th all water weight and bloat is gone.
– The 5th day your fat cells are starting to shrink! Your stomach is getting smaller and you begin to feel lighter (you know when you wake up and your stomach feels flatter and everything about you is just overall lighter- yes that amazing light feeling that gets you to hop out of bed instead of drag yourself out).
– By the 6th day you will begin to realize how less important food is compared to how important it is when you feel amazing, healthy and happy. You feel so good it makes you wonder why you ever over-indulged to begin with.
– The 7th day (morning) – you weigh yourself and you are jumping up and down because you are thrilled you hit your first week goal (the closer you stay to the menu and the cleaner your foods are the more you will lose).  IT’S CHEAT DAY and you enjoy and then right back on and do it again and work toward your second week goal  – it’s that simple.

Follow the plan. It’s 4 weeks until Holiday Break. Where do you want to be and how do you want to  look and feel when you get there?
Saying what you want is easy – it’s time to prove to yourself you can do it.
This vacation you will be feeling as healthy and happy as everyone around you.

Preparing for Christmas

With Christmas less than a week away it may be tempting to just throw all the rules out the window and give in to the holiday’s temptations. Delicious appetizers and extravagant meals followed by decadent desserts. It’s something many people look forward to all year long. But do you really have to put your weight loss plan on hold in order to fully enjoy the holiday? You probably have plenty of excuses to keep yourself from exercising or eating healthy: “I’m too busy with Christmas preparations to fit exercise in to my day”, “I want to relax in my time off from work/school”, “I’ve been really good recently I deserve to eat whatever I want”, and so on. But does it ever really feel satisfying when you give in to temptation? We tend to tell ourselves that we have to go overboard in order to really do a holiday right. But there is also reward in doing something, no matter how small, that makes you proud of yourself when the holiday ends. Think of it not as missing out on something, but more like making a smarter decision that will be even more satisfying.

Something that can really help you get through Christmas as healthy as possible is to stick to your fitness routine as much as possible or make time for exercise in the next week. If you usually wake up for an early morning workout – stick to it. If you aren’t usually a morning person, give it a try. As much as you want to press the snooze and sleep in, working out in the morning not only helps you be productive throughout the day during the rest of the year, but it can also help you fit in more activities during the holidays when you have more free time. It will put you in a good mood, help you sleep better and sticking to a routine will help you stay in shape. When you start the day healthy you are more likely to make good decisions the rest of the day. And going from a healthy lifestyle to completely the opposite and then trying to get back will really overwhelm your body.

On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, try and find a way to put the focus on something other than food. It’s known that Christmas is about more than food and presents, but how often do we really think about this and take it to heart? Come up with a fun activity or new tradition, such as sharing family photos, playing a game or walking around your neighborhood and looking at the Christmas lights. Embrace the opportunity to enjoy the holiday with friends and family and all of a sudden it seems easier to manage when the meal isn’t the only highlight of the night. It will also make it easier to get back to your weight loss plan when the holiday is over. As much as you don’t want to think about the end of this wonderful time, it will go a lot smoother when you are thinking about the happy memories you have instead of the extra work you have ahead.

Healthy Holiday Recipes

With two of the biggest holidays this month, it can seem impossible to stick to your weight loss plan in December. Traditional and seasonal foods are so important to the meaning of both Christmas and Hanukkah but there are a couple ways you can make your holiday meals healthier without feeling like you are missing out on any of the celebration.

Instead of replacing traditional holiday foods, try making existing recipes a little healthier. Latkes are usually made with regular potatoes, but can also be made with zucchini, sweet potatoes, onions and carrots. Though it is traditional to fry them, you can bake them in the oven instead. Simply prepare them to your liking and bake at 425 degrees for 5 minutes on each side.

  bakedlatkes

You can buy applesauce to pair with the latkes or you can make some with just a few simple ingredients and flavor to your taste. Peel, core and quarter whatever flavor apple you like and add to a large pot filled with water. Add whatever spices you choose, such a cinnamon and nutmeg, or leave as is. Heat until apples are tender and cooked through then mash or blend them to however chunky or smooth you prefer.

  quick-homemade-applesauce

Brisket is another recipe that can easily be made lighter. Use the “first-cut” section as opposed to the fattier “point cut” to start. Use a dry rub to marinate and bake in the oven. Serve with sauce on the side.

 brisket

Before you even sit down for Christmas Eve Dinner you have a great opportunity to serve some healthy and festive appetizers and snacks. Spiced nuts are great for the holidays and are delicious and simple. To prepare, warm nuts such as pecans, walnuts, pistachios and cashews or any combination, in the oven then drizzle with a small amount of olive oil and toss with seasonings of your choosing such as salt, thyme, rosemary, pepper, or cayenne pepper.

Go with a red and green theme for Christmas with this clean and gluten free recipe. Chop red and green peppers into thin slices then add a dab of hummus. It’s simple, healthy and festive all in one.

For dinner, you can’t go wrong with a simple roasted chicken. It’s healthy and will please almost anyone at your table. Dress it up for the holidays by laying skinless chicken slices on a bed of pomegranate farro salad. For the salad, cook then cool the farro and add with arugula, romaine, celery, pomegranate seeds, almonds and a vinaigrette of your choosing.

There are so many seasonal sides that can be a fantastic addition to any holiday dinner. Roasted winter vegetables are a great go to. Beets, turnips, carrots, fennel and onions can be combined with thyme and extra virgin olive oil for a simple, colorful side dish.

Try a fresh twist on quinoa with this recipe for Quinoa with Dried Cherries and Pistachios: Prepare quinoa as usual. Meanwhile, combine olive oil, lemon juice and pepper separately then add this mixture to the quinoa. Mix in dried sweet cherries, dry-roasted pistachios, fresh mint and parsley.

  quinoa-with-cherries-ck-x

If you’re looking for something sweet, try one of these recipes: Crunchy Pear and Celery Salad (pictured left) and Pear and Arugula Salad with Walnuts (pictured right). The first salad calls for cider, pear, raspberry or other fruit vinegar to be whisked with a small amount of honey and salt for the dressing. Then add diced pears, celery and pecans to the mixture and season with pepper. Serve on top of a lettuce leaf for a beautiful presentation. For the other salad, simply toss arugula, pear slices and walnuts with mustard vinaigrette.

Putting even just one healthy recipe on your table or bringing it to your host’s table can take away some of the stress of holiday eating. When your mind is less concerned with what you’re eating, you can embrace the holiday and the people around you so much more. Enjoy!

Eat to Live, Don’t Live to Eat

This is the time of year when warm, hearty foods can bring comfort and good feelings in the cold months. You may even associate this time of the year with certain foods, like casseroles during the holidays. You can’t imagine a November without turkey or a December without a special feast. The same can be said for more day-to-day wants and needs that food may fulfill. When you’re stressed do you reach for treats or snacks? When you’re bored do you open the pantry? When you’ve completed a difficult task do you crave your favorite food? Ask yourself – are you living to eat, or eating to live? When you live to eat, you indulge in foods that make you feel comfortable, relieve your stress or boredom, or reward an accomplishment. You eat something because of how you feel emotionally instead of the physical hunger you feel when your body needs fuel. On the other hand, when you eat to live you provide your body with nourishment that fuels and supports your health.

Eating habits can be hard to break. If you were always rewarded with dessert after a good meal or good behavior as a child, you’ll probably still crave something sweet today after something positive. When you want to relax, you may seek out your favorite comfort foods. When you’re feeling stressed you may have a taste for salty or sweet snacks to distract you from your situation, and you may tell yourself you can’t get though it without eating something. Cravings like this can be a huge mental hurdle when trying to only eat when your body needs food. They come on suddenly and after you eat what you thought you needed, you aren’t satisfied at all.

Next time this happens, try taking a step back from a stressful situation whether you have two minutes or two hours. Instead of heading to the break room or kitchen, go for a walk outside or around the office, stop by the gym or just get in a workout at home. You can release endorphins and boost your mood, and doing something productive that gets your blood flowing can help you get in the right mindset to overcome a challenge. When you’re looking for comfort, try another activity like reading a book, walking the dog, taking a bath or watching a favorite movie. When you accomplish something and you’re looking for a reward, treat yourself to something other than food. Remember that a special occasion or success does not have special circumstances or rules. You are still accountable for what you put in your body.

When your body does actually needs food, it will feel different. It will come on more gradual and you won’t seek out something specific like you do when you have a craving. When you eat to fuel your body, you will feel full and satisfied after, without the guilt of indulging in something impulsive. You can’t depend on food for anything other than sustaining life and health. Changing the way you think as well as the way you eat is the only way to have a lasting effect.
